You may know the story of Daniel 3, but do you know the implications?

v.12 Then:
“There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

v.12 Today?
“There are certain Christians whom you have in the province of America: Anarchist Christians. These men, O President, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your politicians, police or military, or worship the flag that you have set up.”

From a culture that likes trite sloganeering like “Be A Daniel,” it is also noticeable the ferocity one faces from Christians today when they are a Daniel, a Shadrach, a Meshach, or an Abednego.

Let’s back up a bit in our reading as well, v. 10 – 11:
“You, O king, have made a decree, that every man who hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace.”

Do you see any striking similarities here too? Calls for imprisonment or deportation for not pledging an allegiance. Advocating physical harm or murder for not standing for an anthem. Why not bring back the fiery furnace?

What was bowing then, may look a lot like standing with your right hand strategically placed over your heart today. From the Bible to recent atrocious events in world history, we’ve always supported the person who stands against assimilation to an impious regime. So the question is, what are you first, a Christian or a Babylonian?
